I wouldn't blame you if you were of the opinion that malls and bookstores were going the way of the hula hoop. But, not only are they not gone yet, but a St. Louis, Missouri mall is suddenly getting a brand new bookstore right now.

This all happened more or less out of the blue. Financial Buzz reported that Barnes & Noble is now opening 58 new bookstores. On their list is a new Missouri location and you won't have to wait long to visit it.

Yes, the St. Louis Galleria is getting a new Barnes & Noble. Get this. The official store locator for the book chain says that it will be open on October 23!

How can a bookstore chain open a new Missouri location in 2024 and make a profit in the culture of people reading books on devices?

I can only speculate, but I think I know what's going on here. The younger generation has started to embrace physical media again and I submit the resurrection of vinyl records as evidence. It seems that kids are starting to appreciate being able to hold an album in your hands and read the liner notes while listening to it. The same trend also is now making sales of movie Blu-rays and DVD's increase somewhat.

Just maybe the new bookstore in the St. Louis Galleria is a sign that the joy of reading a book you can physically touch isn't quite dead yet.
