Missouri Woman a Victim of Heartbreak Scam, Loses $1.2 Million

This is terrible on every possible level. There's a report that a Missouri woman fell victim to a romance scam that cost her over $1.2 million dollar and there's a Texas man that's responsible.

Fox News was one of the many media outlets I saw that shared the story of a woman who's name has not been released from St. Louis. She entered a relationship with Rotimi Oladimeji of Texas. The unfortunate part for her was that it wasn't really romance, but a scheme to collect as much money from her as possible.

According to the report, the man contacted the St. Louis woman and claimed there was a man who was being held against his will in the United Arab Emirates. They continued to request funds to assist in his release, but it was all fiction. The total losses to all of those she was connected to amounted to $1.2 million dollars.

Rotimi Oladimeji of Texas pled guilty to "two counts of mail fraud, two counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud" according to the Fox News story.

They reported that there was another man involved in the scheme who is Olumide Akrinmade, 37, of Richardson, Texas and he has pled not guilty of this crime.

Homeland Security agents were the ones who intercepted the messages between the St. Louis woman and the accused. From the reports, it appears they never met in person, but all contact was online only.

There's no update as of this time if she'll recover the funds taken from her or not.
