20 Missouri Roads Drivers Should Avoid During Heavy Rain
Missouri frequently has episodes where weather systems will dump heavy rain in a very short period of time. When that happens, there are many roads and highways that you want to avoid if at all possible with 20 being more treacherous than the rest.
What makes one road in Missouri more flood-prone than another?
There are many factors, but the National Weather Service says that buildings and highways reduce how much rain is absorbed which leads to more runoff onto roadways. Those highways that are near the many rivers and streams in Missouri are definitely more susceptible to flash flooding events where the water rises faster than the nearby ground can absorb it.

There's an old but every important saying that if you see a flooded roadway turn around and don't drown. The one thing that many drivers underestimate is how deep water can be on a road and how powerful even a relatively small amount of water can be. It's not hard to have your vehicle swept off of a highway and into a stream or river if you miscalculate. Unfortunately, Missouri is prone to heavy rain events that make this a frequent issue to deal with. It's not always possible to avoid some of these major travel routes, but it's worth a little more driving time during a rain storm rather than taking a chance of a life-threatening incident.
