I think that many overlook places like Monroe City, Stockton and Warsaw. There are many great lake towns in Missouri that are not located near Lake of the Ozarks and the cost of living isn't bad there either. Especially with Monroe City, you have Mark Twain Lake practically in your backyard and it doesn't have the crazy amount of commercial development like you'll find around some of the southern Missouri lake towns.
