6 New Madrid Quakes Hit Missouri, Including Town with Fun Name
The good news is there will be no damage to repair which is an understatement, but there have been a flurry of 6 New Madrid quakes that have shaken southern Missouri over the past few days including one near one of the state's funniest town names.
If you look at the USGS earthquake site, you'll see that the New Madrid Fault has been active this week with a half-dozen tremors in the boot heel region of Missouri. These quakes have all been confirmed by a USGS seismologist.
If you look at the list, several of these have been strong enough to feel and have been reported by residents to the USGS. The highlighted one is near the town in Missouri that is regularly mentioned as one of the funniest names in the state.
A few years ago, little ole Cooter, Missouri did not make our 11 funniest ROFL town names which was a grave mistake on my part. It's not unusual at all for earthquakes to happen in or near Cooter as it's in the heart of the New Madrid Fault Seismic Zone. It's just more evidence of my ongoing immaturity that it makes me chuckle a bit whenever someone at the USGS has to list Cooter on their recent earthquake list.
The best news is all of these quakes are inconsequential and are actually a good thing since small tremors can be viewed as energy release along the earthquake fault line. Sure, they could be a leadup to a major event, but they're likely not. Just the New Madrid Fault proving it has a sense of humor again by shaking little ole Cooter, Missouri.
