In a year full of Missouri earthquakes in strange locations, this might be the strangest of them all. A tremor early Friday morning happened almost directly under the Current River in Missouri and was reportedly felt by dozens.

Stop me if you've heard me share this before, but a strange earthquake in Missouri has been confirmed by the USGS and it wasn't a tiny one either. According to the seismologists at the USGS, this tremor happened in the middle of the night at 1:41am Friday morning, June 27, 2025 yet was felt by 31 who submitted reports of the quake.

This 2.9 magnitude quake was not in the Missouri Boot Heel like typical New Madrid fault shakers, but was practically under the Current River.

The mystery to me is that it's normally not easy to feel a 2.9 magnitude quake and even stranger since it happened in the middle of the night. It is true that earthquakes in Missouri are felt more than they are in California due to the makeup of the geology in the region. A Missouri quake is felt across a larger region than one of the same magnitude on the West Coast. Still, how strange to have a New Madrid quake in this part of Missouri and for it to be felt by so many. Combine this new quake with the significant ones in Kansas and Oklahoma neighboring Missouri and you have a bizarre earthquake activity week.
