It started with strange isolated sightings, but by the time it was over creepy clowns were spotted in nearly every part of Missouri, then they vanished and the mystery of who or what they were has never been solved.

Starting in late September of 2016, people all over Missouri reported seeing creepy clowns

It was September 29, 2016 when 2 strange clowns were spotted in the Kirksville, Missouri area. That same day, the Rolla, Missouri Police investigated creepy clowns which included odd messages sent through social media, too. By October 4, 2016, the phenomena made its way to Springfield, Missouri. I believe it was October 9, 2016 when a child in the Kansas City area reported seeing a clown emerge from bushes near 85th Street and Parallel Parkway. Police investigated, but never did find the person who spooked the child.

Did you know the creepy clown phenomena actually started in Missouri 44 years ago in May of 1981?

It was a report I came across by UPI on May 23, 1981 that said "Police earlier this week were skeptical of reports that a garish clown was chasing schoolchildren with knives, but they now think those reports are valid and the frightened children who report them are telling the truth." In that case, Kansas City police found one clown, but it wasn't the knife-wielding one that frightened the child, but someone on their way to a party.

In all the cases reported in Missouri, none of the creepy clown suspects were ever located or identified. The sightings just...stopped. Many back in 2016 just dismissed it as an internet hoax that inspired copycats, but a few of the Missouri sightings involved individuals who really were threatening. The fact that there was never any closure to the odd clown sightings of 2016 makes you wonder if this will happen again. All it takes is one sighting to go viral and I predict you'll see the same craziness happen again. If that occurs, let's hope no one really gets hurt then either.
