New 10-Day Temperature Outlook for Missouri is Truly Terrifying
Since I live in the presence of a weather expert who follows other weather experts, I see a lot of weather things, but even I have not seen a 10-day temperature outlook more terrifying than the one just issued for Missouri.
First of all, please don't freak out over this map just shared by the NOAA Climate Prediction Center. Yes, it is accurate, but it also probably doesn't mean exactly what you think. It's their new map showing the next 6 to 10 day outlook in regards to temperatures. See if this doesn't take your breath away, too.
I really think someone at NOAA should reconsider how they produce these maps. If you look at it based on colors, you'd probably get the impression that most of Missouri and Illinois are about to be blasted back to the ice age in a fashion like what happened in the movie "The Day After Tomorrow". What the map is actually portraying is the likelihood that an area will have below normal temperatures. What this map really means is the weather nerds are almost completely certain that it's going to be way below normal cold for January. That's it.
How cold will it really get in Missouri and Illinois over the next 10 days?
It depends on exactly where you live, but more than likely we're just looking at single-digit lows at night so not nearly as dire as the map makes it look. I will add that I have not seen temperatures after January 20, 2025 yet, so it's possible we'll see a dive below zero in some areas, but we'll burn that bridge when we get to it.
