I can guarantee you're going to see some snarky lists of reasons why you should consider leaving Missouri in 2024. This is not one of those. Sometimes people seriously need a change and I can give you 5 epic states you should consider if leaving Missouri is on your to-do list in the new year.

While I was born and raised in Missouri, my career has taken me all around the country. (Thanks again, radio) When I recommend these alternatives to Missouri, I speak from experience. I have either lived in these states or have friends that do. I'm not a fan of those who write about places they've never been. Let's get started.

I lived in Wyoming for nearly 3 years. Great people there and if you value elbow room, you won't find a better state. There is so much land and fewer people than you'll find anywhere else in the country. On the downside, winters can and will be brutal there. If you love snow though, Wyoming is your new favorite place. Real estate is expensive, too.

I have not lived in Georgia, but I have several friends that have. The benefits are very mild winters and the Atlanta area especially is booming with job opportunities. You'll also find some mountains in the northern part of the state and beaches on the southeast coast. Watch out for hurricane remnants though.

If you want to live Missouri, but maintain a place with some of the same qualities, consider Wisconsin. Other than winters having a bad attitude, you have the Dells to enjoy and you also get Great Lakes to hang out near. Wisconsin is also considered one of the friendlier states in America.

Idaho is very much a trending upward state. It's similar to Wyoming in that not many people live there. Winters are generally not awful and you rarely see bad thunderstorms. I will say that the movie Napoleon Dynamite does capture what small town Idaho is like though. It's more of a simulation than you think. For some in Missouri, that's a positive. You also get the scenic Snake River Canyon which is next to many of Idaho's great towns. Boise is the place you want to go if you have money to spend on real estate and want city luxuries. You also need to like Californians as they are flocking to that part of Idaho.

I nearly moved to Texas myself a few years ago. I have so many friends that live in the Lonestar State and love it. If you treasure wild west values and a "don't tread on me" attitude, you'll love Texas. There's a reason why it now is one of the top states in America people are moving to. Don't think you're completely escaping winter though as the state has had some cold spells in recent years, but it's way less harsh than Missouri. That's for sure.
