No One Noticed This Mini-Swarm of New Madrid Quakes in Missouri
This is not a breaking news item. As a matter of fact, if I didn't show you what's been happening along the New Madrid Seismic Zone over the past few days, there's almost no way you would have noticed. But, there has been a mini-swarm of interesting activity.
Even though I am a self-professed earthquake nerd, what's been happening along the New Madrid Fault in southern Missouri would not even have been on my radar if not for a couple of quakes that happened today (Thursday) which caused me to dig deeper.
The 2 quakes that happened earlier today were no big deal. Tiny shakers not even above the 2 magnitude range, but looking at the past 3 or 4 days, you see there are nearly a half dozen quakes in the region.
Once again, no big deal as these were all tiny quakes that not even one person reported feeling and it's no mystery as to why. Too small to feel, but they happened just the same.
In a weird coincidence, I came across this sudden mini-swarm of New Madrid quake activity while researching a training exercise the Missouri National Guard did a dozen years ago regarding a hypothetical failure of Bagnell Dam in the event of a massive New Madrid quake. Odd.
There's obviously no reason for alarm as tiny quakes happen along the New Madrid Seismic Zone all the time, but I thought it was worth mentioning since no one else seems to have noticed.
