A new year often means changes, but for 47 working in the tech sector of Illinois, the changes in the new year are not good as they are now suddenly jobless.

This is one layoff notice that hits very close to home. I saw on Illinois Work Net that a technology company had just filed a WARN notice alerting the state that they were laying off workers. The company in question is The Computing Technology Industry Association in Downer's Grove, Illinois. They just laid off 47 as of January 9, 2025 with the notice being posted by the state today.

The Computing Technology Industry Association is also known as CompTia which is the leading computer certification provider. I know this because I am a self-taught computer technician in my other life and obtained my certifications from CompTia back in 2007. I made the mistake of getting my certifications with an emphasis on hardware and operating systems instead of networking which was not a smart choice on my part. Oh, well.

I have not been able to confirm the reason for the layoffs at this point, but I'm genuinely surprised as CompTia is truly an industry standard for certifications which are practically required for the most competitive tech jobs. I won't speculate, but I would have guessed the tech sector in Illinois would be one of the most secure fields you could be in at this point.
