The exact number is unknown, but there are multiple confirmations of reports that one of Illinois' largest grocery store chains just laid off hundreds of workers.

According to the website ScrapeHero, Kroger is one of the most common chains in Illinois with 31 locations in 25 different cities. The website Grocery Dive just reported this past week or so that Kroger has cut many jobs at their retail analytics subsidiary 84.51. This was confirmed by a spokesperson for Kroger although they did not provide the exact number of jobs eliminated.

Unfortunately, these are not the only Kroger layoffs. Supermarket News says that 200 Kroger corporate employees were let go recently also. The report says this was done as part of a restructuring that involved shutting down some projects while increasing focus on others.

Why is Kroger laying off so many workers?

Only the company executives know for sure, but it seems like the numbers are significant as there is a new thread on Reddit that was created less than two weeks ago where former Kroger corporate employees are being asked to elaborate on what happened.

Not that any job loss is good, but it appears the cuts have been more or less limited to the corporate offices and not the store employees. It's possible that these cuts could be due to the efforts of Kroger and Albertson's to merge their companies. Time will tell if these cut are the full story or only the beginning.
