There are many things in Illinois that are difficult to understand unless you live here and this is one of the best examples. What some are calling the weirdest dish in the Land of Lincoln is really a creation that combines the best of two completely different worlds into one wonderful concoction.

For the record, this is not a dish that I consider weird. I consider it awesome and not really strange at all. It is a new collection just shared by Love Food where they documented what they think are the weirdest dishes in each state. Their choice for Illinois is well-known by nearly all that call the state home.

What is Illinois' weirdest dish that no one else seems to understand?

It's gravy bread which is made with some of the key ingredients in Chicago's famous Italian beef described by Love Food as "a hunk of white Italian bread (the same kind used to make the beef sandwich) is drenched in the meaty jus sauce". They key is you have to serve it warm. Cold gravy bread is still good in its own way, but is not the way nature intended it.

If you tell a non-Illinoisan that you love gravy bread, they're gonna think you're dipping rolls or sandwich bread into brown gravy. Nope. It's not that one. That's what makes true Illinois gravy bread a delicacy unique to this part of America.
