How To Keep Kids Calm During Bad Weather
With the storms we've been having in the Tri-States lately, children may get really scared. Find out how you can keep them calm during bad weather.
Last night, when the sirens went off in Quincy, it reminded me how unprepared I am on how to keep my kiddos calm during the storm. I mean, REALLY unprepared. No weather radio, water, blankets, extra clothes/shoes--nothing.
So this morning, I did some research so I can be better prepared next time. According to How To Survive a Tornado (for kids), there are a few steps to take to make sure your family will be safe.
1) Be Prepared - learn as much as you can about tornadoes. This way when bad weather does roll through the Tri-States, you can let your kids know exactly what is going on.
2) Make a Survival Kit - these items should be in a kit for your house and your car
- First-Aid kit
- A battery-operated radio (or weather radio)
- Flashlights for each member of the family & extra batteries
- Bottled water
- Blankets
- Extra clothing (jackets, socks, shoes)
- Non-perishable food
3) Head to the basement (or lower level of your house) and stay there - stay together and don't go back upstairs until you hear from your radio or TV that it is all clear and you're safe.
How To Survive a Tornado (for kids) is a great website to sit down with your kids and discuss a plan as a family and be better prepared for severe weather. Get your family prepared now so when we have another severe weather scare like we did last night, you'll know exactly what to do.
