Hannibal Parks & Recreation is sponsoring the first Cardboard Boat Races at the Hannibal Aquatic Center on Saturday, July 23. The cardboard boat check-in is 8 a.m., with the first launch at 9 a.m.  Only youth ages 8-18 are allowed. Each boat should be for two people.

There are three categories:

  • Fastest Boat
  • Titanic Award
  • Best Decorated

The boats and oars must be made of cardboard and tape only.   Jenna McDonald, director of Hannibal Aquatic Center, said, “We wanted to try something new at the Hannibal Aquatic Center.”  There used to be a raft race in the Mississippi River but this boat race should be a lot safer. “We want this to be a lot of fun and give youngsters a way to use teamwork and creativity.”

Registration must be made by July 18 at the Hannibal Parks & Recreation office at City Hall, 320 Broadway.  The registration fee is $10 per boat. Rules and regulations are available at www.hannibalparks.org. For more information call 573-221-0177 Ext. 212
