Hundreds Spot Huge Green Meteor Over Missouri and Illinois

One of the most prominent meteor events of the year so far was on display over Missouri and Illinois as hundreds reported seeing a bright green fireball and many also captured pictures and video as it happened.

Many on the Missouri sub-Reddit were talking about this bright green space rock.

According to the American Meteor Society, nearly 400 residents reported seeing this huge space rock as it entered the atmosphere over Missouri and Illinois and disintegrated in a bright green flash. Samuel G was one of those who captured a picture of the meteor.

As of the time of this writing, there are nearly 400 reports that were submitted to the American Meteor Society which makes this one of the most notable meteors of the year so far.

Are there any major meteor showers happening right now?

According to the latest sky calendars, there won't be any major meteor showers that are expected until early-to-mid July when the Southern delta Aquariids and alpha Capricornids peak. the uptick in recent meteor sightings over the past few weeks are apparently just rogue space rocks that ended up being in the path of Earth. If nothing else, maybe this will inspire some streaming ideas of the movies "Deep Impact" and "Armaggedon".
