If you were looking at just the right part of the sky over Missouri late Saturday night, you were treated to a flaming meteor that zoomed overhead and backyard video captured the moment it happened.

According to the most excellent Missouri Skies YouTube channel, this unexpected meteor was captured on their video around 9:45pm Saturday, March 28, 2026.

What's up with all of the unexpected meteors lately?

There's an interesting article that I just saw shared today by MSN from Newsweek which asks the question "Mysterious spike in meteors warrants serious investigation". Their point is that we're not currently in an expected meteor storm yet there have been many very prominent meteors spotted over America including at least one that involved a meteorite being found on a driveway in Medina County, Ohio on St. Patrick's Day.

Earth Sky is another site wondering what's up with all of the meteorites seemingly pelting Earth's atmosphere out of nowhere. I've seen some say that the meteorites we're seeing now are from asteroids that are coming from the direction of the sun meaning we can't really see what's coming. No, that doesn't mean we have an extinction level event headed our way (yet), but it does mean that scientists need to figure out what's happening with all of these big space rocks soaring over our heads.
