The Fishing For Freedom event, held this past weekend in Quincy, was successful despite all of the flooding in the area. The local fishing competition was the 9th year for the event. It was begun by Bob Havermale with 69 warriors participating nine years ago. This year some 265 warriors from 25 states were a part of it making the event one of the largest in the country.

On Saturday they held the Hero’s banquet for some 1,200 people and then Sunday the actual fishing tournament began. In recent years the event was expanded beyond the Mississippi River to include Mark Twain Lake.

With the flooding problems, this year’s tournament was held on several lakes in Pittsfield, Jacksonville, Hamilton, Mt.Sterling as well as at Mark Twain Lake. The weigh-in had to be moved to the parking lot behind the Quincy Mall.

It is estimated that the Fishing for Freedom tournament brings in some $200 thousand to the local economy.
