Depression is a Very Treatable Disease
October is National Depression Education and Awareness Month. The Quincy area is blessed to have an organization like Traditions of Western Illinois around as they have been able to treat thousands of people over the years for cases of depression.
According to a Traditions newsletter, one in five Americans, or 20% of us, are likely to experience depression in our lifetimes. Annually, more than 17 million Americans suffer from depression, a very common and very treatable disorder of mood. With that said, an encouraging statistic is that 80% of those who are treated for depression will improve.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms of depression and they have lasted for a few weeks or longer, speak to a mental health professional or your primary care provider:
- A sad, empty mood; a loss of pleasure in your life
- A loss of interest in activities that you once enjoyed
- A noticeable change in eating habits; unexplained weight loss
- An increase in the number of headaches, stomach aches, and physical symptoms
- Lack of energy ... fatigue ... or an inability to get out of bed in the morning
- Difficulties with decision-making
- Feelings of guilt, anxiety, or worry
Remember, 80% of those who seek treatment for depression will improve!
