
New Madrid Fault Shakes One of Missouri’s Funniest Towns
If you were in the Missouri boot heel today, you may have felt a jolt. There was an earthquake confirmed by the USGS that just so happened to shake one of the Missouri towns with the funniest names.
The USGS confirmed that an earthquake struck this tiny place in the Missouri boot heel today at 1:26pm
It was only a 2.1 magnitude quake which is no big deal, but it was centered just northeast of one of my favorite Missouri towns, Cooter. Technically, this New Madrid Fault quake struck near Acorn Corner which is also a name I really enjoy. You won't find more down-to-earth people than those who call Cooter and Acorn Corner home. You might remember that another New Madrid quake hit this area just a few weeks ago that was centered right under I-55. I have no doubt that the sensationalist sites will be yelling about this from the rooftops claiming "the big one" is imminent. Oh, wait...

In all seriousness, this is about as normal a quake as you will see in southeastern Missouri. There is a magnitude 1 or 2 quake that is confirmed in this part of Missouri at least a couple times per week, however it's not often that Cooter is right near the center of one. For what it's worth, there was another minor 1.8 New Madrid quake a little earlier today. Maybe this proves that our favorite earthquake fault that will probably ruin all of our day's someday has a sense of humor, too.
