1936 Video Shows Hannibal Getting Presidential Visit For Bridge

Digging down a rabbit hole on YouTube, I came across the coolest video of Franklin D. Roosevelt (our 32nd President) dedicated the Mark Twain Bridge in 1936. The new bridge was not only dedicated by the president, but he was the first to drive over it.

In the video, you will see thousands of people just waving at the president as he drives down Broadway (I think), before heading to the bridge to make a speech and officially cutting the ribbon. You can't hear the speech, it's more like a silent movie, but still pretty cool to watch.

It's just so cool to see the people from the era, the music in the background, and knowing that the bridge has so much history. We've all driven on that bridge especially if you driving from Illinois to Missouri, and to know that it was dedicated by a president is a really cool part of Hannibal's history. FDR also help construct the Mark Twain Light House in 1933, which has been lit by Presidents Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Bill Clinton during ceremonial occasions.

More fun fact, FDR was not the only president to visit America's Hometown. President Jimmy Carter and the First Family visited the cave in 1979, and signed its guest book, which you can see for yourself in the gift shop.

So much history in the small town on the Mississippi River, and I know there is so much more to come.
