There are some important things to note before you head off into the Missouri woods for a hike. First, you need to be aware of the venomous snakes that commonly are found near and on some of these trails. While most snakes are not aggressive, you need to be careful to avoid stepping anywhere where you can't see. Copperheads and the occasional rattlesnakes love to dwell under or behind rocks. If you step on or near one, you might get a dangerous bite. That can be especially problematic when you're in a remote area without emergency first aid being readily available.
It's also important to note that several of these hiking trails are in parts of Missouri where black bears are present. Experts will tell you that it's important to make noise when you hike and to hike in groups when possible. Just like snakes, most bears avoid people and will flee if they know you're coming, but if you happen to surprise one, that's when you risk a defensive attack. Bear attacks are rare everywhere and even more so in Missouri.
Don't let any of these cautions dissuade you from getting out and enjoying the most beautiful parts of Missouri on foot. There are few things better in life to clear your mind than a one-on-one experience with nature. Missouri is a blessed land to offer so many of those scenic options.
