According to goodhousekeeping.com, the best place to take the kids on a family-friendly/budget-friendly trip this year is to the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park in Des Moines, IA. The sculpture garden is a free outdoor garden in the heart of downtown Des Moines and has a ton to see, in the article they say...

"The John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park in Des Moines consists of 28 unique and enormous sculptures — a 27-foot hollow human form made of white steel letters is one you can admire from the inside and outside — spread across four acres of velvety grass. (Free)"

I have spent a lot of time in Des Moines (my little brother played college football at Drake University in Des Moines, Go Bulldogs!) and I have been to the Sculpture Park and it really is fun to walk around and take pictures. Des Moines is a great city to spend a weekend spring/summer getaway at with the kids, it isn't too far from the Quincy/Hannibal area and has a bunch of great bars, restaurants, arts district, and a zoo!

The website also mentioned the number one things for families to do with the kids in Illinois and Missouri, for Illinois (no surprise) they chose the Willis Tower in Chicago, and for Missouri (no surprise again) they chose the City Museum in St. Louis.
