Missouri Gold Rush: 5 Spots Still Worth Searching
When I was a kid, I planned to someday strike it rich by finding gold in Missouri. That hasn't worked out so far, but maybe it's because I was looking in the wrong place as I've learned there are 5 spots in the state where gold has really been discovered.
Before I share what I've learned, I want to be clear about some very important things. While most of these locations are public areas, it's entirely possible that some could encroach on private land. Very important to be aware of your surroundings and location and NOT enter someone's private land without permission. With that disclaimer out of the way, let's get on to the gold hunt.
I found an incredibly helpful guide to gold in Missouri on Rock Chasing. They give 5 Missouri places which are hotspots where gold has already been found and 5 other locations which are also believed to have gold present. Let's start with the 5 Missouri places where gold has reportedly been found:
- Spears Gold Mine - Howell County, Missouri
- Pea Ridge Mine - Washington, Missouri
- Murray Gulch - near Elmer, Missouri
- Sand and gravel deposits - near Kirksville, Missouri
- Glacial deposits - near Gifford, Missouri
As an added bonus, here are 5 other Missouri locations where they advise looking for gold:
- Chariton River - Missouri
- Current River - Missouri
- Sinking Creek - Missouri
- Big River - Missouri
- Clear Creek - Missouri
One more thing to keep in mind. Depending on what equipment you plan to use, you may need a permit from Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
