
Video Captures Massive Meteor Explosion Over Illinois Friday
There was a surprising bright sky event over Illinois Friday night if you were looking at the right place at the right time. Fortunately, a backyard camera captured the moment it exploded as captured by a man in the Land of Lincoln.
According to the American Meteor Society website, this meteor was spotted over 6 states including Illinois around 10:43pm Friday night, February 6, 2026. It was also reportedly seen in Iowa, Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin, too.

Are there currently any meteor showers happening?
According to the American Meteor Society, there are no known meteor showers happening right now. The next meteor showers expected are the Lyrids and the Aquariids which begin around the middle of April. The meteor spotted over Illinois and other states Friday night was just one of those magical isolated meteors that impact Earth's atmosphere with no warning. Thankfully with the many backyard and security cameras like the one shared by Marco in Berwyn, Illinois, we can all witness these unique sky events.
