If you have picked up green onions in Illinois recently, do NOT eat them until you've checked details of an emergency recall that's due to a fatal infection risk.

I saw this urgent recall issued by the Food and Drug Administration just shared which says green onions widely available in Illinois had a dangerous Salmonella contamination risk. The green onions were sold under three different brands in Illinois including Trader Joe's, Church Brothers and Imperial Fresh. This is what one of the packages sold in Illinois look like.

The bulletin says that Salmonella was found in these green onions during a random test so they are being removed from circulation as a precautionary measure. The good news is that as of this writing there have been no illnesses in Illinois connected to this recall.

The FDA warns that Salmonella is "an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems".

How do you know if you have Salmonella?

Symptoms include "fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain" and immediate medical attention should be sought if you are experiencing these after eating green onions and are in the high risk group.
