Former Quincy Gem’s ambidextrous pitcher Pat Venditte has been called up to the Oakland A’s from Triple-A Nashville. Venditte, who played for the Quincy Gems in the Central Illinois Collegiate League in 2006, will be in uniform when the A’s meet the Boston Red Sox tonight.

With the regular season for baseball now over and the playoffs underway, I thought it would be a good time to review the picks I made back in March when the 2014 Major League Baseball season opened. Here is what I wrote back on March 28.

The 20 year career of New York Yankee Shortstop, Derek Jeter, came to an end yesterday with the end of the 2014 season. Not only did the Yankees lose a shortstop, but Major League Baseball lost a great ambassador.

It's hard to find other New York Yankee fans in this area besides me, but finding fans of Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter is easy. Actually, you would be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't like the future Hall of Famer.

Some 1510 fans turned out to watch the Quincy Gems defeat the Terre Haute Rex last night at Q.U. Stadium. Could they have been watching the final game ever for the Quincy Gems?

It was May 16, 2009, five years ago today, when I lost my best friend and hundreds of others did likewise with the passing of John Tripp. A year ago, I started to write about John, but I kept deleting what I was writing. I finally decided that what I wrote last year still fits today. I wrote it from my heart a year ago and the words still say everything I want to say today so here it is.

Memorial Day will be a memorable one this year at Busch Stadium as the New York Yankees play the St. Louis Cardinals in a 3:15 game. March 11 has always brought memories and good times for me.  My father was born on March 11 and every year we would celebrate his birthday and every year he would get the same birthday gift from me. That gift was two tickets to opening day of the baseball season. I haven't been able to give him tickets for 29 years now. He passed away in 1985 from Alzheimer's or dementia as it was known then. Friday is Military Appreciation Night at the ballpark as the Quincy Gems play host to the Military All-Stars at Q.U. Stadium. The Military All-Star team was founded by President George H. Bush to promote the Wounded Warrior Program in the United States.
