After all I've experienced in life, it's truly hard to surprise me, but this did it. A tiny Missouri town has suddenly appeared among the top 10 fastest-growing home prices in the state.

Stacker frequently updates the places in Missouri where home prices are surging. Nearly without exception, the top 10 is dominated by St. Louis and/or Kansas City, Missouri area places. Imagine my surprise when the new list today included a place that isn't near a metro area and isn't known for zooming home prices.

You might want to sit down for this. #9 in the state of Missouri for a surge in home prices is...

Congratulations, Shelbyville, Missouri - #9 in the state of Missouri for home prices rising with a population of just 518 according to Wikipedia. Here are the numbers shared about real estate in Shelbyville right now:

- Typical home value: $218,290
- 1-year price change: +$33,271 (+18.0%)
- 5-year price change: +$98,550 (+82.3%)
- Metro area: not in a metro area

That's a pretty big jump in home prices both in the long and the short term.

I have an interesting relationship with Shelbyville, Missouri. Along with having many friends that call that part of Missouri home, I once broke my hand in the central square there while competing in the Shelbyville Old Settler's Reunion Days years ago. I'll never forget the gasp from the crowd when they saw gruesome gash in my arm after I fell down. Good times, good times.

Fortunately, that horrid event did not deter home buyers in Shelbyville, Missouri - now a top 10 place in the state of Missouri.
