Are you looking for a way to save some money on your grocery bills? Maybe you should look into scrounging around for a salad at Hannibal's newest park.

Hannibal's Parks and Recreation is hosting a Spring Salad Search this week. A naturalist who formerly worked for the Missouri Botanical Garden will show you how to identify edible plants and put together a first-class salad. You'll be on the cutting edge of the culinary scene. Foraging for food has gained in popularity, especially along the west coast. My one experience with eating a foraged salad goes back to grade school when the science teacher, Sr. Carol, had us plucking greens from the playground. Let me tell you, no amount of Hidden Valley Ranch could make that salad taste good.

Around here, the only real foraging that matters is the search for morel mushrooms, which have not been bountiful so far this frigid spring. If you'd like to take part in the search for mushrooms and other edibles direct from Mother Nature, you're certainly welcome to take part in the Spring Salad Search. It takes place this Wednesday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at Sodalis Nature Preserve. Contact the Hannibal Parks and Rec for more information.
