Parts of Illinois & Missouri are being Renamed
Two places in Illinois and four in Missouri are being renamed as part of a Federal Policy that was put into place. Here are the places being renamed, and why they are being renamed.
I saw this article from newschannel20.com, and it is about two places in Illinois that have been renamed, in the article they say...
"A suburban Chicago waterway and a western Illinois island have been renamed under a new national policy to remove their previous names' use of a racist term for a Native American woman."
And according to the Department of the Interior Secretarial Order 3404, the names of the Illinois sites were Laughing Squaw Sloughs (in Cook County) which will now be known as Cherry Hill Woods Sloughs, and Squaw Island (in Calhoun County) which will now be known as Calhoun Island.
In Missouri there are 4 sites being renamed, the first is Squaw Creek (in Atchison County, Holt County, and Nodaway County) now it will be known as Minnesota Valley Creek. The second is Squaw Creek Ditch (in Holt County) now it will be known as Minnesota Valley Creek Ditch. The third is Squaw Run Creek (in Christian County) now it will be known as Run Creek. And finally, Squaw Hollow (in Madison County) will now be known as Turkey Hollow. To see the complete list of name changes across the United States click here!
