FBI Busts Illinois Doctor in Billing Fraud Case
A doctor in Illinois was caught red-handed for billing Medicaid and insurance companies for non-existent services and will now spend 10 years in prison as a result.
The FBI in Chicago, Illinois just issued a status update on their Facebook page telling the story of a physician in Chicago who now faces a decade in prison for wrongdoing.
The press release from the United States Attorney's Office in the Northern District of Illinois provides the details of what went down. It says that Mona Ghosh owned and operated Progressive Women’s Healthcare, S.C. in Hoffman Estates, Illinois which specialized in obstetrics and gynecology services. It states that medically unnecessary tests including "endometrial ablations and biopsies, ultrasounds, vaccinations, laboratory blood tests, and tests for sexually transmitted diseases" were done sometimes without even patient consent. Dr. Ghosh pled guilty to 2 counts of health care fraud which the FBI says resulted in a 10-year prison sentence and the court "ordered Ghosh to pay approximately $1.5 million in restitution".
“When physicians submit fraudulent claims to federal health care programs, they divert taxpayer-funded resources away from those who truly need them,” said U.S. Attorney Boutros. “Dr. Ghosh’s fraud scheme was particularly egregious because she endangered the health of her patients by performing unnecessary medical procedures, including procedures that severely limited some patients' ability to have children in the future. We applaud the victims’ strength to come forward and confront this defendant. Our Office will fight tirelessly for victims and work diligently with our law enforcement partners to safeguard taxpayer funds and hold accountable those who steal from the American public.”
