NWS Says Strong Tornadoes & Hail Possible in Missouri Friday

There is still a chance of severe storms developing over parts of Missouri on Thursday, but now the National Weather Service in St. Louis is warning about a better chance on Friday when strong tornadoes and large hail could impact the state.

According to the newest National Weather Service St. Louis weather story, you need to be especially weather-aware on Friday, May 16, 2025. They are now saying while there's only a 30% chance of severe storm development today (Thursday), there is now a 70% chance that Friday will see explosive storm development.

The exact words from the National Weather Service meteorologists say "Some of the storms will be capable of strong wind gusts, very large hail and tornadoes. A tornado or two may be strong." That development of a bigger storm threat for Friday has been picked up by some online meteorologists, too.

What does the NOAA Storm Prediction Center say about Friday for Missouri?

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center now has some places in east-central Missouri in the red moderate risk area for thunderstorms on Friday which is definitely concerning.

While nearly all of Missouri has at least some chance at seeing severe storms Friday, the southeastern quarter of the state is in the most peril based on computer models right now. If you live in this part of Missouri, make sure you have multiple ways to get severe weather warnings Friday. You will more than likely need it.
