It's just a typical Friday in the Missouri bootheel. New Madrid, Missouri is having heavy snow and also an earthquake today according to the USGS.

Let's begin with the weather. Here's the official forecast for New Madrid, Missouri from the National Weather Service.

The tiny southeastern Missouri town is supposed to end up with around 7 inches of snow before the winter storm is done later tonight.

But wait, there's more...

Just as the winter storm was kicking into high gear Friday morning, the USGS confirmed that there was a 2.4 magnitude earthquake just a few blocks from New Madrid centered around Marston, Missouri.

Frankly, the snow today is much more of a threat to the daily life of the residents of New Madrid, Missouri than a relatively small quake like this, but I found the timing to be interesting. Just as you're preparing to deal with an early morning heavy snow storm, the New Madrid Seismic Zone taps you on the shoulder and says "remember me?".

There are two good news items in this story. First, this small of an earthquake will barely wake anyone up early. Second, the winter storm should be done dumping snow on this part of Missouri by Saturday or at least we can hope. Just a typical day in the Missouri bootheel.
