You should be aware that there is one Missouri highway that hides a dangerous surprise. According to the state highway patrol, a sinkhole has suddenly appeared next to a roadway and they've learned it extends under it, too.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop F just shared some disturbing pictures on their X page. This is what appeared near MO 5, near County Road 426, in Howard County, Missouri.

It's unclear from their status update if they've closed Missouri Route 5 or if they're just monitoring traffic while workers access what it will take to repair it. While a sinkhole under a Missouri roadway is a bit alarming, it really shouldn't be surprising considering the fact that Missouri has more than 16,000 sinkholes according to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The good news is it doesn't appear this new sinkhole has injured anyone or their vehicle. Imagine your tire hitting that huge hole. That would be something hard to explain to the insurance company.
