If you need to burn something Thursday and you live in parts of Missouri and Illinois, you probably should find something else better to do as there's an elevated fire danger level.

The National Weather Service in St. Louis, Missouri just issued this alert for parts of northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois for Thursday, October 24, 2024.

It's a dangerous combination of very dry conditions, big wind potential and low humidity that makes Thursday particularly iffy for any burning especially near dry grass.

The US Drought Monitor shows that most of Missouri is still enduring extremely dry conditions and that's especially true for extreme southwestern Missouri.

The humidity for northeast Missouri is not expected to top 30% which combined with wind gusts over 20 mph means that any and all burning could result in very explosive and unpredictable results.

The National Weather Service in St. Louis says they will be issuing another update early Thursday morning to advise if conditions are more favorable for needed burning.
