Legend Says Hornets Will Predict How Much Snow Missouri Will Get
It's been said that you are supposed to learn something new every day. I guess this is my thing today as I've come across a legendary rhyme that claims you can know how much snow Missouri will get based on what hornets do.
I came across an interesting article from Farmer's Almanac that mentioned a rhyme that is allegedly an indicator of upcoming winter snowfall. Want to know how much snow Missouri will get? Riddle me this, Batman.
“See how high the hornet’s nest, ‘twill tell how high the snow will rest.”
If this is accurate, paint me concerned. I haven't had to deal with many hornets nest at our Missouri home this year thankfully, but if memory serves me correctly (doubtful), I believe the ones I have seen have been alarmingly high. This obviously isn't the most scientific observation, but I'm curious if there's any database that keeps track of stuff like this from different parts of Missouri (also doubtful).
I have shared previously the belief that squirrels can also predict winter weather and snowfall in particular based on the height of the nests they build. Perhaps we need to add hornets to the wise nature winter weather prediction list.
