It's been ten years since Katy Perry's career-launching single, "I Kissed a Girl," first impacted radio, catapulting the Santa Barbara singer to mainstream superstardom.

Released on April 28, 2008, "I Kissed a Girl" became Perry's first No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit—it charted for seven consecutive weeks—and has since been certified multi-Platinum in a number of countries.

On Thursday evening (May 3), the pop star shared a throwback video on Twitter in celebration of the smash single's 10-year anniversary.

"#TBT This weekend marked the 10th anniversary of the release of I Kissed A Girl! Thank you for believing in me then, and growing with me since," she captioned the clip, which shows a then-23 year old Perry excitedly hearing the track on the radio for the first time, as well as performing it in a variety of venues and award shows.

Despite its chart success, "I Kissed a Girl" wasn't without controversy. Over the years, the song has been criticized for commodifying homosexuality, playing into the male gaze and appropriating the experience of gay and bisexual women for the sake of single sales.
