There is no good time of year to lose your job, but I would argue that now is the worst time. Sadly, that's the sudden reality for 132 workers in Missouri that have just learned they will be losing their jobs right before Christmas.
According to the Missouri Office of Workplace Development, 132 workers in the Kansas City, Missouri area will be looking for jobs as International Paper Company has announced layoffs confirmed by a WARN notice just submitted. This is one of their plant locations in Kansas City.
The WARN notice says that the International Paper Company in Kansas City is closing and the last day of employment is December 17, 2024 - exactly one week prior to Christmas Eve.
The industry site Packaging Dive says the International Paper Company layoffs are happening at locations around the country. A total of 674 employees across the country are reportedly facing layoffs as the paper industry deals with the seismic shift over the past decade from paper to digital.
