A major part of Interstate 70 in Kansas City will be closed for 11 months as improvements begin according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The Missouri Department of Transportation just shared this video on X preparing the public for a long-term closure of part of I-70 in Kansas City.

The Improve I-70 Project on the Missouri Department of Transportation website says that construction began in the Spring of 2025 and will continue through the Spring of 2028. I found some more details on the trucking site CDL Life. They said "I-70 will close between Prospect Ave. and Van Brunt Blvd. from January 2027 through December 2027 to allow for construction". According to Google Maps, that would be approximately this area of I-70 in Kansas City.

That means those who are traveling to either the Kansas City Chiefs or Kansas City Royals stadiums will need to find alternate routes. Considering the timing of the construction, it's entirely possible it could begin around the time the Kansas City Chiefs could have playoff games. That's why MODOT wants travelers to know and plan now so they won't get a rude surprise in early 2027.
