2011 Joplin, Missouri Twister Will Be a Netflix Special in March
We are approaching the 14th anniversary of the tornado that changed Joplin, Missouri forever. The day of that horrific twister will be a special on Netflix on March.
Earlier today, Netflix shared the trailer for The Twister: Caught in the Storm. The trailer reveals it will be a documentary told through the eyes of those that lived through that historic storm.
As most of us in Missouri remember, this was a storm that developed late in the day on Sunday, May 22, 2011 with the first reported touchdown of the tornado west of Joplin at 5:37pm. By the time this multi-vortex twister lifted into the clouds, a staggering path of destruction was left behind:
- 158 deaths
- 1,150 injured
- 8,000 buildings damaged
- 4,000 homes destroyed
- $2.8 billion in damage
A National Weather Service analysis showed the twister intensified quickly into an EF-5 right through the middle of Joplin.
The Twister: Caught in the Storm will not end with the damage done by the tornado, but how Joplin rallied together and rebuilt the town over the next decade.
The Twister: Caught in the Storm will debut on Netflix on March 19, 2025.
