I have lived in areas where BASE jumping is common and it's a dangerous pastime even on a good day. For a Missouri man, it was sadly tragic as he was killed jumping off the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

I saw USA Today share the news originating from the National Park Service of a fatality that occurred on Thursday, August 1. They say that the body of 43-year-old Justin Guthrie of St. Anne, Missouri was found at the bottom of the Grand Canyon approximately 500 feet below the South Rim. He was reportedly found with his parachute deployed, but that sadly did not save him.

As the National Park Service points out, this is one of the reasons why BASE jumping is prohibited in every part of Grand Canyon National Park. I spent a couple of years in Twin Falls, Idaho which is one of the rare places where BASE jumping is allowed and even there you'll occasionally hear of tragedies.

The National Park Service initially withheld the name of the deceased jumper until next of kin were notified. Now that his family has been made aware, we now can confirm it was 43-year-old Justin Guthrie of St. Anne, Missouri.
