Wait— We’ve Been Eating Popcorn Wrong?
When nobody was looking popcorn got weirdly creative. Just within my lifetime popcorn has moved from being cooked on the stove-top, to being air-popped, then we began putting it in the microwave and now there are myriad flavors of gourmet popcorn, yes gourmet popcorn. We, as a species have conquered flavor. We can make anything taste pretty much like anything else.
Never did I ever though consider putting my popcorn in the freezer. Not before I popped it, but after it had been popped.
I’ve had sad, room temperature, over buttered soggy popcorn, and unless it’s stale it’s still edible (I’m not proud).
Perhaps I should have just taken it to the freezer and freshened it up. Please know, I don’t know if freezing old popped popcorn is a thing –it may be, apparently all things are on the table.
Why not give it a shot? At all levels. Put your hot buttered popcorn in the freezer just to see if it enhances the saltiness. Obviously, it will make it crispy, and it’s supposed to accentuate flavors, and when the popcorn is chilled it won;t stick to your teeth.
Perhaps freezing some of your gourmet popcorn that you will buy or be gifted this holiday season should be frozen too? Give it a try, it may be amazing.
Frozen popcorn is having a viral moment, but the concept has been being shared for months now (maybe even before- but nobody was paying attention).
This is a good reminder to never forget the kitchen is a lab, and your apron is just part of your lab coat.
