We’ve all been there. “Don’t make me pull this car over!” Whether we’ve said it, or had it said to us, we’ve been there. Now imagine you’re a substitute bus driver with a full load of north St. Louis County kids who think they are on a free roll because their regular driver isn’t there. Our “there’s” though didn’t end up in assault.

Substitute teaching takes a special level of patience. Kids will try and occasionally succeed in putting the “sub” in an uncomfortable position. Substitute bus driver would probably need that extra level of patience plus. The kids know you don’t have a relationship with them to appeal to. So, It's easy to imagine a bus ride getting out of control if you don’t have a particular set of de-escalation skills.

A substitute bus driver in Florissant, MO. was arrested last week at Hazelwood Central High. The driver lost control of the kids on the bus and didn’t just threaten to pull over, he actually pulled over. Separated a couple students then allegedly punched both students, pulled the hair of one of them, kicked them off the bus and left them on the side of the road and drove off to finish his route…
