It may not seem like it, but a new report shows that Missouri ranks among the top ten in the nation for highway quality and cost.

I drive in St. Louis and Kansas City a lot, and I can honestly say that the highways are not that bad to drive on. Are they perfect? No.

However, compared to other major roads I drive on Missouri has figured out how to maintain the quality fo it highways, and the reason why it ranks 9th our of 50 for high quality control.

The Reason Foundation released its 28th Annual Highway report and placed Missouri 9th overall. The Show-Me State ranked high in Capital & Bridge Disbursements, Maintenance, and Administration Siburstments among others.

The state ranks 20th in traffic congestion. Apparently, these experts have not driven in Kansas City, St. Louis, or Columbia. All three can be a nightmare, especially if there is an event going on, like a professional game or concert. What a nightmare driving can be!

Overall, nice job, Missouri Department of Transportation—keep up the great work! Want to know how Illinois did? Well, not that great. The Land of Lincoln ranks 36th out of 50 for highway quality.

Ouch.

The number one ranked state? North Carolina.

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
