The 3-6 Holt Indians arrive in America’s hometown for first round district football Friday night at Porter Stadium against the 6-3 Pirates.

District football is a different animal. You lose, your season is over. You can’t take any game and pre slot it as a win or you’ll be finished. Seniors: Waylon Anders, Mike Ferreira, Jarren Landis, Chance Whiteside and the rest of the upper classmen want to push as far as they have in recent years. Districts are the 2nd season, where you apply what you have learned throughout the regular season. Teams now have a solid grasp of their identity, and are ready to impose it on opponents.

The Pirate defense wasn’t the focus at the beginning of the season, but each week they have grown in confidence and stature. Holt doesn’t have the firepower of Ft. Zumwalt West whom Hannibal held to 17 points, almost half of what they had been scoring per game before coming to Porter Stadium.

Holt is coming in on a four game losing streak, only averaging 15.5 pts per game during that streak. Holt features Junior QB Ivan Dean who has twice as many rushing touchdowns (11) as passing touchdowns (6). He only averages 55 yards rushing per game and passes for 142 yards per game. He spreads the ball around well when he throws, but only completes 51% of his passes. The main running back for Holt is Senior Xavier Adams and their defense is led by athletic Junior Gavin Moore, with Seniors Anthony Washington and the Behrndt brothers.

Hannibal will aim to throttle Dean and Adams on defense, and institute a strong running game on offense to start. These are things that the Pirates should be able to accomplish Friday night.

Pregame starts at 6:30p, the kickoff at 7p with Bill Shuler on the call on 97.9 KICK-FM and online at 979kickfm.com
