In Illinois There is More to Hot Dogs Than the Chicago Dog
Hot dogs are serious business in Illinois. Rule one; No ketchup. This is non-negotiable. Rule two- See rule one.
Distinctive for all of the toppings that make a hot dog a flavorful meal
If you are building a Chicago Dog the traditional language is to “drag it through the garden”. That means you’re going to get all the things on it: pickle spear, chopped onions, tomato wedges, peppers and relish with a poppy seed bun.

There are variations. You can go with tomato relish. Celery salt is a traditional go to also. Jalapenos instead of sport peppers can be done, and while traditional yellow mustard is the go-to, you may be able to get a spicy brown mustard instead.
Get creative with the toppings (but still no ketchup)
However, there is another hot dog in the Chicagoland area though that often gets overlooked, but has its long time fans. That’s the “Francheezie”. A hot dog split down the middle and stuffed with cheese (cheddar or American) then wrapped in bacon and fried. It goes by other names in other cities and regions, but became popular in Chicago almost 80 years ago as the anti-salad food.
Look for a Francheezie to switch up the Chicago Dog norm
You can find Francheezies in Chicago mainly at hot dog stands but also available at several cafés, delis and hot dog joints, but also at the state fair. Be on the lookout. Where you find it, you’ll know there are fans lurking. Order one up and make friends.
