One of the scariest movies of all time involved a motel and Norman Bates, but even he might not have seen the scariest motels in Illinois according to the experts who have ranked them.

It pains me to say this, but don't believe everything you see on the internet. When it comes to the "best" or "worst" of anything, be careful that you're not just seeing one person's opinion. That's why I put this together using content and rankings that were created by actual people who really did stay at these Illinois hotels and motels. They used an industry standard American Customer Satisfaction Index to decide what hotels and motels are the best in the Land of Lincoln.

What do the internet 'experts' say customers said were the scariest motels in Illinois?

The two chains located at many different places in Illinois that came up at the bottom of the customer survey results were Motel 6 and Super 8.

Both Reader's Digest and Hoyt Livery who used the customer satisfaction surveys as their basis for rankings named both Illinois chains at the bottom.

Let's be clear that it's not fair to use a broad brush to say that ALL Motel 6 and Super 8 locations in Illinois are bad. No way. I've stayed at many over the years and most have been pretty OK. Safe to say that I didn't stop there expecting luxury, but rooms were clean and staff were helpful (mostly) so I really don't have a personal complaint.

Ask to see a room before you book it and use your gut test on whether the Illinois motel looks safe. One final piece of advice. If you hear the front desk person say "Mother?!", then maybe stay someplace else.
