If the plans are carried out as reports say this will, this will mark a seismic shift in the gas station landscape. The number one most common gas station brand in Illinois is apparently planning to close 1,000 locations by the end of 2025.

If you look at Scrape Hero, you'll see the top 10 largest gas station brands in Illinois. At the top of the heap is a brand that has 753 gas stations in Illinois in 316 different cities. Good luck finding a place in Illinois where this brand isn't.

The brand in question is Shell which has big changes in their plans for the rest of 2025.  Finance Buzz says that Shell plans to close 1,000 stations by the end of the year.

Why is Shell closing so many gas stations by the time 2025 is over?

The report says they believe that electric vehicles are the future and along with the gas station closures will develop and deploy more than 70,000 public charging stations.

As of this date, there are no mentions of how many Illinois stations that Shell will close out of the 753 currently in the state. The report does say that the first wave of closures will likely begin in Texas, but states like Illinois will almost certainly be affected this year.

If the closure of so many petroleum stations by Shell really happens this year like the reports say, are electric vehicles really ready to become more prevalent? Considering how expensive many EV's remain compared to older gasoline-powered vehicles, it's hard to think a big majority of car and truck buyers will make that jump, but Shell appears to be sure this is what the future will be. Time will tell.
