Check Your Mailbox – Illinois Just Sent Money to 140,000 People
I will admit that I hate going to the mailbox for fear that my terrifying utility bill will be in it. This is something that would change my attitude. The state of Illinois just mailed out money to nearly 140,000 people so maybe your trip to the mailbox will be a pleasant surprise.
Perhaps you remember a few weeks ago when I shared details of how the state of Illinois has more than $5 billion dollars in unclaimed property? That's one of the reasons why the Illinois state treasurer has been busy filling out checks and licking envelopes over the past month.
Fox 2 in Chicago is reporting today that the Illinois State Treasurer has confirmed that nearly 140,000 checks have been mailed to names that have been connected to unclaimed property. Their story says that many people think the checks are a scam and don't cash them.
You do need to be careful as scammers do send out fake checks in hopes that you'll deposit it in your bank account which connects them to your money, but the state of Illinois checks are easy to confirm being legit.
If you have any concerns about whether or not a check you've received is the actual returned property program, you can verify your information directly through the Illinois State Treasurer's website. Here's hoping that your mailbox has a pleasant surprise waiting for you in the next couple of days.
