The rising Mississippi River is forcing the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department to close its Rec Center and four parks until the water recedes.

Recreation Supervisor Mary Lynne Richards announced the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center is closed for the week due to evacuation and flooding in the forecast. Employees are moving equipment out of the building.

Pickleball leagues will be held tonight, Oct. 9, but the Senior Adult dance, usually held every Wednesday, is canceled Wednesday, Oct. 10.

Nipper, Kiwanis, Dulany and Norfolk & Southern parks are expected to flood as well.

The flood gates are in place along the Hannibal levee which protects the downtown business district.
